Title: In Search of Absolution
Rating: MA
Length: Epic (>60,000 words/25 chapters so far)
Genre: action/adventure, angst, drama, mystery, romance, tragedy
Characters: Hermione, Draco, Ginny, Harry, Pansy
Era: Hogwarts

Synopsis:
Hermione, Ginny, Pansy, Draco, Harry, & Blaise (or Ron? not sure yet) are involved in an Irish curse. Here is the link to what is complete so far http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4781718/1/Restless.

Editing Needs: brit-picking, canon, characterisation, consistency, dialogue,grammar/spelling, plot
Other:
I just need an extra set of eyes to catch things I can't seem to see. I am a grad student so the writing should be fairly strong. My main weakness is dialogue, it just seems too clipped to me. I would like to see some brit-picking, as I am American and from the south. Two points against me! I also need to make sure there are no huge plot holes (I am sure they are there, I just can't see them!!) and the story flows.

Beta: [K+ to MA] Drama Mid-Length (any era)

Username: fenix_grus
Name: Fenix
Age: 20

Ratings: K+ to MA
Genres: drama, action/adventure, general, angst, horror/dark, romance, humor, tragedy, mystery
Length: mid-length, epic, one-shot, short, ficlet, drabble
Characters: Snape, Harry, Draco, Luna
Eras: post-hogwarts, hogwarts, pre-hogwarts, next generation, marauders
Status: complete, in progress

Beta Experience: working as student publications editor, starting/participating local creative writing initiative (brainstorming, editing, detail-picking, etc.), casual fiction/essay editor to friends for 8 years
Editing Strengths: consistency, grammar/spelling, english speaker, brit-picking, dialogue, canon, plot, characterisation
Return Time: 3-4 days from receiving piece (5,000 words)

Other: I am very open to new/difficult/specific/strange work, and I like to be challenged and to help others improve their writing (and improving my own =P).  I enjoy complex political plot arcs, mature syntax, and having fun with your work! (I also don't mind checking over smut periodically - there's pretty much nothing I won't try once ;) )

Welcome Back!

And We're Back!

Since some things have been changed, please check out the Essentials, as they have been updated. But, if you need a quick start guide, here it is:

Membership Is Open: I no longer have to approve you for you to join. Just click and go!

Posting Is Moderated: All posts will be moderated and should be approved within 24 hours of submittal. Writers do not have to join to post, betas do.

Don't Tag Your Entries: The mod will do that for you once your post has been approved and added to the community.

Beta Profiles Are Permanent: Unless you go on a hiatus, for whatever reason, your profile will stay up at the community and will be added to the Beta Profiles List.
Quick Note: This list doesn't exist yet because we just came back and there haven't been any profiles submitted. Once there have been, it'll go up. Sound good?

Beta Requests Are Temporary: Your request will stay up at the community for 28 days or until you notify the mod that you have found what you're looking for. If you have not found a beta by your deletion date, notify the mod, and your post will be kept open for another 28-day cycle.

All Pre-Hiatus Entries Have Been Purged: If you submitted a beta profile before the hiatus went into effect in January, your entry has been deleted from the community and you will need to submit an updated form to the queue.

Any questions? Comment below or feel free to PM me.

HP_BetaReaders Will Be On A Short Hiatus

Hello, everybody. This is Jessica, your mod here at hp_betareaders. For the past several months I have wanted to dive back into the community and revamp it, because obviously there are some issues with the system I had originally set up. Now, while I have a break from my classes at university, I am going to have the chance. Despite my best intentions, it seems like many of the LJers who utilise the community are not also utilising the tags or the forms I had put up at the beginning of the year. I am not upset about this in the least; I simply want to try to figure out something that will be used, and hopefully make it easier for people to use the community and, therein, find betas and/or writers to work with.

All of that said, hp_betareaders will be, essentially, "offline" for a few weeks while I try to get this all sorted out. I have disabled posting access for all members for this period of renovation. Please be patient with me; I expect the community to be back up and open for business by 21 January. I also want to mention that I have removed 3 members from the community because their journals have apparently been deleted from LJ. If, however, you were accidentally removed, I'm sorry and just join up again, as membership has not closed.

On a final note, I would like to request feedback from any and all of you who have utilised the community in one way or another. Whether you have posted a fic, your beta credentials, or just replied to someone else's post, I would love to hear your ideas for how to better organise all of the information going up constantly in the community and anything else. Feel free to send me a message or reply here. All comments are appreciated and not taken personally. :)

Happy Holidays!
Jessica, thebloodinside

HP Beta-Readers Up and Running!

Welcome to the now open community hp_betareaders!

The community has been a long time in the making. After the opening at the beginning of the week, a few Harry Potter fans have already joined me at the community. And as of a few minutes ago, posting access is available to all members who are ready to post their searches.

Please take time to read the Essentials if you have not done so already. I hope your search is successful. And, again, welcome to hp_betareaders.

Beta Profile Template

If you are a beta interested in getting involved in someone's work, use the following form to post your beta profile. Make sure to have the Essentials open in another window or tab so you can use the community's terms.

- - - - -

Username: your LJ username
Name: the name you go by
Age: your true age

Ratings: the fic rating(s) you would like to beta for
Genres: the type(s) of main conflict that you would like to see
Length: the lengths that you are willing to read
Characters: up to five of the characters you would like to see
Eras: the time periods that you would be willing to read
Status: would you prefer that the fic is already finished or still in progress?

Beta Experience: list here any editing/betaing experience you already have
Editing Strengths: dialogue? canon? english speaker? etc.
Return Time: how long would it take you to read, beta, and return a 5,000 word fic or chapter?

Other: any other comments or requests that you would like to make

Copy/paste this into your post:

- - - - -

Please keep in mind that when filling out the second portion (genres, pairs, etc.) that you should list only the options that you are interested in betaing in order of preference. So, the genre that you would most like to beta should be listed first, followed by the second one you'd be willing to beta, etc. If you are willing to beta any/all options for a specific category, list them all individually - DO NOT list 'all'.

After you have filled out the form and are prepared to post your profile, you must title your post. The subject of your post should follow this format:

Beta: [Ratings] [Genre Choice #1] [Length Choice #1] [(Era Choice #1 or "any era")]

Here are three examples of what your post's subject may look like:

Beta: T Drama Mid-Length (post-Hogwarts)
Beta: T-MA Romance Epic (any era)
Beta: K+-T Humor One-Shot (Marauders)

Note: Do not tag your entry; the mod will do this for you once your post has been reviewed and approved.

Once you have done all of that, you are ready to submit your beta profile to hp_betareaders' moderation queue. The only thing I am looking for before posting your profile to the community is that your profile looks correct: (1) you have used the post template, (2) you have titled your profile according to the subject format, (3) you have used the correct terminology for your category preferences, and (4) you have no spelling errors. If I find a problem with any of these things, your post will be rejected and you will be required to fix the problem area before resubmitting it to the queue. It's that simple!

Note: You must be a member of the community to post a profile. If you submit a post to the queue and you are not a member at the time of review, your post will be rejected.

Once your profile has been published to the community, you may want to subscribe to its reply thread or check it often for replies as many users of the community comment directly on betas' posts. In addition to your profile being added to the community, your post will also be added to the community's Beta Profiles List. When you are effectively "off the market," no matter what the reason, please contact the mod so that you can be given information on how to "freeze" your profile. You may, at any time, reverse this by sending another message and receiving information for having your profile re-opened.

Beta Request Template

If you are a writer in search of a beta, you can use the following template to introduce your fic (or proposed fic) to potential betas. If your fic is proposed (you have not yet begun writing, only brainstorming) or in progress (you have begun writing, but have not reached The End), answer the questions in section two (rating, format, etc.) based on what you expect to write. For example, if your in-progress fic is currently rated T, but you plan to write some scenes involving self-mutilation in a later chapter, you should rate your fic as MA.

- - - - -

Username: your LJ username
Name: the name you go by
Age: your true age

Title: the title or proposed title of your work
Rating: the rating of your fic's content using
Length: the length of your piece
Genre: all genres that your fic fits into
Characters: up to five of the main characters featured in your fic
Era: the main time periods in order from most used to least used
Status: is your fic complete or still in progress?

Synopsis: a brief description of the conflict or plot of your fic to grab the attention of a beta

Editing Needs: what does your story need the most help with?
Other: any other comments or requests that you would like to make

Copy/paste this into your post:

- - - - -

After you have filled out the form, you should choose a subject for your post. The subject of your post should follow this format:

Fic: [Optional: "Fic Title"] - [Rating] [Most Prevalent Genre]/[Second-Most Prevalent Genre, if any] [Length] [(Most Prevalent Era)]

Here are three examples of what your post subject may look like:

Fic: M Tragedy/Romance Short (Post-Hogwarts)
Fic: K+ General Drabble (Hogwarts)
Fic: "Pitch" - T Mystery/Angst Ficlet (Hogwarts)

Once you have done all of that, you are ready to submit your fic to hp_betareaders' moderation queue. You do not have to be a member of the community to submit a beta request.

Once your post has been approved and published to the community, you may want to subscribe to its reply thread or check it often for replies as many users of the community comment directly on writers' posts. When you have enlisted the help of a beta (or as many as you are looking for) and no longer need to continue your search, please contact the mod so that your post can be removed from the community.

All beta requests will be deleted after 28 days, so if you are still in search of a beta at that time, you will need to contact the mod to delay your post's deletion for another 28 day cycle. Don't worry - if you forget to send me a message, I will notify you at least 24 hours before your post is deleted so you'll have a reminder.

Determining Your Fic's Rating

The rating system used at hp_betareaders is unlike the ratings that many of us see on films. These ratings are Fiction Ratings. Here is a guide to these ratings, courtesy Fiction Ratings.

K+ some content may not be suitable for young children
Suitable for more mature childen, 9 years and older, with minor action violence without serious injury. May contain mild coarse language. Should not contain any adult themes.

T contains content not suitable for children
Suitable for teens, 13 years and older, with some violence, minor coarse language, and minor suggestive adult themes.

M contains content suitable for mature teens and older
Not suitable for children or teens below the age of 16 with possible strong but non-explicit adult themes, references to violence, and strong coarse language.

MA contains explicit content for mature adults only

Betas should note that the highest rating that they are permitted to offer to read is the one appropriate to their true age.

Fic Length & Rating

Knowing which length and format option your fic fits under can be difficult to know because of the many names for them. This is a guide to fic lengths and formats.

drabble   less than 500 words
ficlet   501-2500 words
one-shot   2501-5000 words (or 1 chapter)
short   2-5 chapters
